Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media as well as a public speaker, and Canadian. She created Feminist Frequency which is a website that features videos and comments on the representations of women in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian a Canadian American media critic. Feminist Frequency is a non-for profit site for education that investigates female representations in popular stories of culture - was created and directed by Sarkeesian. In her efforts to break down stereotypes that are associated with women in pop media, she is also working with issues that relate to the gender-specific harassment of women as well as other classes of people on the internet. Sarkeesian holds a York University master's in social, political and philosophical thought. Apart from being a well-known public speaker, she has given presentations at TEDxWomen The XOXO Conference as well as the United Nations Broadband Working Group. Passionate about issues of gender identity and feminism from the age of 7, she started her own website Feminist Frequency in 2009 while she was still at University. In 2009, the ambitious young lady was harassed online for launching a website featuring a series about gender and videogames. The attack did be a deterrent, but it was a boost to her determination to be a feminist media critic. Her numerous contributions to the field of feminists have been recognized by numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian, a media critic, has been awarded many awards, and also founded Feminist Frequency as an educational organization that focuses on the ways women are depicted within media narratives.
