Khan was born Catholic. She went to the Hyde Park Saint Thomas the Apostle Church primary school. Her love for music to her grandmother, who gave her a taste of jazz when she was a child. Khan discovered a love for Blues and rhythm when she was young teenagers. The first time she formed a girl band, the Crystalettes at age eleven together with Taka. The late 1960s saw the formation of the Crystalettes. Khan was a frequent attendee at civil rights rallies along with her father's second wife Connie an avid advocate of the cause. Khan became a member of the Black Panther Party after befriending a fellow member activist and Chicago native Fred Hampton in 1967. Many believe she got the name Chaka within the Panthers but Khan claims it was Yoruba Baba who gave her the nickname at age thirteen when she joined the party for the first time.
